How do I get my business to show up in AI answers?

Updated 2026-07-25

You get named by AI answers the same way you earn a good referral: by being a clear, trustworthy, well-known answer to a specific question. In practice that means three things. Publish plain answers to the exact questions your customers ask, on your own site, structured so a machine can read them. Get mentioned on other reputable sites, because AI models lean heavily on what third parties say about you, beyond your own claims. And be consistent everywhere, so the AI is confident it has the right business. There is no button to press and no ad to buy. It is earned, and it compounds.

Think of it as a referral, not a ranking

The old question was “how do I rank on Google.” The new one is “when someone asks an AI for a recommendation, how do I become the business it names.” They are related, but the second one behaves more like earning a referral than gaming a ranking.

An AI answer engine, whether that is ChatGPT, Perplexity, or the AI summary at the top of Google, is trying to give a confident, correct answer. To name your business, it needs to know you exist, understand what you do, and trust that you are a real and credible answer to the specific question asked. That is the whole game, and it is earned the way trust is always earned.

The three things that actually get you named

Answer the real questions, in plain words, on your own site. Not marketing copy. The actual questions your customers ask, answered directly and completely, in language a machine can lift. Every guide on this site is built that way on purpose. If a customer would ask it out loud, it should have a clear answer somewhere you publish.

Get mentioned where you do not control the page. This is the part most small businesses miss. Models lean heavily on what third parties say about you, your reviews, a mention in a local roundup, a listing in a reputable directory, a quote in a trade publication. Your own site states your claims; the rest of the web is what makes the AI believe them. One good earned mention can outweigh a lot of self-description.

Be the same business everywhere. Same name, same phone, same service area, same description, across your site and every place you appear. Inconsistency makes an AI unsure it has the right business, and an unsure model leaves you out. Consistency is boring and it works.

What does not work

There is no ad to buy, no button, and no vendor who can guarantee you a spot in ChatGPT. Google itself says there are no special tricks for its AI features beyond being genuinely helpful and findable. If someone promises guaranteed AI rankings, they are selling you a fiction. The reason this matters is that the real method, earned credibility, is slower but it is also durable: a competitor cannot simply outbid you for it.

Where to start

If you want the hands-on version, the technical side of making your pages easy for a machine to read and quote is its own short guide: how to make your website easy for AI to read and cite. If you are weighing this against everything else AI could do for your business, the assessment puts it in order of what actually pays off first. This is not separate from your AI strategy. It is part of it.

Questions people ask

Can I pay to show up in ChatGPT or AI answers?
Not the way you buy a Google ad, no. AI answers are assembled from what the models find and trust across the web, so the path in is being genuinely findable and credible, not paying for placement. Anyone selling you guaranteed AI rankings is selling something that does not exist. What works is the unglamorous version: clear content, real mentions, consistent information.
Does my own website even matter if AI is answering for me?
It matters more, not less. Your site is where you state the facts in your own words, in a form the AI can lift directly, your services, your area, your prices, your answers to common questions. But your site alone is not enough, because models weight what others say about you heavily. The mix is: a clear site, plus mentions and reviews on pages you do not control.
How long does it take to show up in AI answers?
Longer than you want and there is no switch. It builds from the same signals as ordinary reputation: content that answers real questions, citations from other sites, reviews, consistency over time. A brand-new business with no footprint will not appear overnight. One that steadily does the work becomes the answer, and once it does, that position is hard for a competitor to buy away.
