ChatGPT Team vs Enterprise for a small business: which one do you actually need?

Updated 2026-09-22

Start with ChatGPT Business, which is the plan that used to be called Team. OpenAI renamed it in 2025 and kept the features, the seat pricing, and the two-user minimum. Business is self-serve: you sign up with a card, pay per user monthly or annually, and get the things that matter to a small company, meaning your data is excluded from model training by default, a shared workspace with an admin console, SAML single sign-on, and a SOC 2 Type 2 audit behind it. Enterprise is a sales conversation with an annual contract and no published price. It adds SCIM user provisioning, custom roles and real-time usage analytics, data residency choices, a compliance API for audit logs, a custom security review, and dedicated onboarding and support. A small business needs Enterprise only when a regulator, a big client, or its own IT setup demands one of those specific things. If none of them apply, Business does the job and you can move up later without losing anything.

First, the name changed

If you searched for ChatGPT Team, you will not find it on OpenAI’s pricing page anymore. In 2025 OpenAI renamed the Team plan to ChatGPT Business. Nothing else changed: same features, same per-user pricing, same two-user minimum, and existing Team workspaces simply became Business workspaces. So the real question for a small business is Business vs Enterprise, and this guide uses the current name from here on.

The short answer

Buy Business. It is the plan built for small and growing companies, and it already includes the things a small business should actually care about:

  • Your data stays out of training. OpenAI does not use business data from Business or Enterprise to train its models unless you opt in. This is the line between a business plan and the consumer accounts your staff are probably using today.
  • A workspace you control. An admin console, user roles, and the ability for admins to view, export, and delete conversations in the workspace.
  • Real security basics. SAML single sign-on, multi-factor authentication, encryption at rest and in transit, and a completed SOC 2 Type 2 audit.
  • Self-serve. Starts at two users, credit card, monthly or annual billing. You can be running by lunch.

Enterprise has all of that too. What it adds is a set of controls that large organizations need and most small ones never touch, wrapped in a sales process with an annual contract, invoicing, and no published price.

What Enterprise adds, and who it is for

Here is the honest list, drawn from OpenAI’s own Enterprise and privacy pages, with the small-business translation next to each item.

Enterprise addsWho actually needs it
SCIM provisioning, so users are created and removed from your identity system automaticallyCompanies with an IT team and enough turnover that manual seat management is a chore
Custom roles applied to groups, with permissions per toolOrganizations with departments that need different rules
Real-time usage analyticsAnyone rolling out to hundreds of people who needs to see adoption
Data residency optionsBusinesses whose regulator or client requires data kept in a specific region
Compliance API for audit logs of conversationsRegulated firms that must be able to produce records
Custom security review and a signed contractBusinesses whose enterprise clients require vendor security questionnaires
Dedicated onboarding, account management, 24/7 support with SLAsCompany-wide rollouts with change management
Invoicing and an annual contractLarge deployments buying through procurement

Read that right-hand column against your own business. A twelve-person accounting firm, a home-services company with two office staff, a real estate team: none of those need automated provisioning or regional data residency. What they need is the training exclusion, the admin console, and a policy for what goes into the tool. Business gives them the first two. The third is on you, and we wrote a one-page AI policy template for it.

The four cases where a small business should ask for Enterprise

Size is not the trigger. These are.

  1. A client requires it. If you serve a bank, a hospital system, or a large enterprise, their vendor security team may ask for a formal review and a contract that names data handling terms. Business does not come with a custom security review. Enterprise does.
  2. A regulator or contract requires data residency. If your data must stay in a particular country, that is an Enterprise feature.
  3. You must be able to produce audit records. Some regulated firms need to show who asked what and when. The compliance API and audit log live on Enterprise.
  4. Your identity system is the source of truth. If you already run staff through a directory with automated onboarding and offboarding, SCIM provisioning is worth having, and it is Enterprise-only.

Notice what is not on the list: wanting better models, wanting more usage, or wanting to look serious. Business already runs on OpenAI’s advanced models, and OpenAI lets Business workspaces buy extra credits when a team runs into usage limits. If usage is your only complaint, buy credits or a premium seat before you call sales.

What both plans still do not solve

A business plan fixes the account problem. It does not fix the habit problem. Even on Business, the cleaner practice is to strip client names and account details from a prompt when the task does not need them, because most tasks do not. We go through how each ChatGPT tier handles your data in is your business data safe with ChatGPT.

The other thing neither plan changes is the gap between a person using ChatGPT and AI doing a job in your business every day. A shared workspace makes the team faster at the first thing. It does nothing for the second, which needs the AI wired into your tools and kept running. That distinction is the whole point of should you just use ChatGPT for your business, and it matters more to your returns than which plan you pick.

A practical order of operations

  1. Move everyone off personal accounts onto one Business workspace. Two seats minimum, so even a two-person shop qualifies.
  2. Turn on single sign-on if you have it, and set admin roles so one person owns the workspace.
  3. Write the one-page policy: approved tools, what never goes in, who reviews output.
  4. Run for a quarter. If a client questionnaire, a regulator, or your IT setup produces one of the four triggers above, talk to OpenAI sales about Enterprise. The workspace carries over.
  5. If the work you keep doing in ChatGPT is the same task every day, that is the moment to consider a proper build instead of more seats.

Where this fits

Picking the plan is a ten-minute decision once you know the four triggers. The slower question is what your team should be doing with it, and where AI would actually pay off in your operation. That is what the assessment covers, and if the answer turns out to be training rather than software, we do that too.

Questions people ask

Is ChatGPT Team the same as ChatGPT Business?
Yes. OpenAI renamed the Team plan to ChatGPT Business in 2025. Existing Team workspaces became Business workspaces automatically, with the same features, pricing, and limits. If a guide or a colleague still says Team, they mean the plan now sold as Business.
Does ChatGPT Business train on my company data?
No, not by default. OpenAI states that data from ChatGPT Business, ChatGPT Enterprise, and the API is excluded from model training unless you explicitly opt in. That is the single biggest difference between any business plan and the free or Plus consumer accounts your staff may be using today, and it is the same on Business and Enterprise.
How many people do I need for ChatGPT Business or Enterprise?
Business starts at two users, and you can buy it with a credit card the same day. OpenAI does not publish a seat count or a price for Enterprise; you contact sales, agree an annual contract, and pay by invoice. In practice that process is built for organizations rolling ChatGPT out company-wide, not for a team of eight.
When should a small business choose Enterprise over Business?
When something specific forces it: a client or regulator that requires a formal security review, a need to keep data in a particular country, an IT team that wants users provisioned automatically from your identity system, or a compliance obligation that needs audit logs of conversations. If none of those are on your list, Business covers you, and upgrading later is a workspace change, not a migration.
What if my work involves patient records or other regulated data?
Then the ordinary business plans are not the whole answer. OpenAI offers a separate healthcare workspace built to support HIPAA compliance, and it will sign a Business Associate Agreement for the API. Before any of that, decide whether the data needs to leave your building at all; for some businesses, private AI on hardware you own is the cleaner path.
