AEO vs SEO: what changed, and what a small business should actually do
Updated 2026-07-25
The one-line difference
SEO, search engine optimization, was about ranking your page in a list of links so someone would click it. AEO, answer engine optimization, is about being the business named inside the answer an AI gives, where there is often no list and no click at all.
That shift sounds small and it changes the target completely. Under SEO you competed for position three instead of position eight. Under AEO you are trying to be the source the machine quotes, or you are invisible. There is no position eight in an AI answer.
What carries over, and what does not
Most of the underlying work is the same, which is the reassuring part. A clear site, content that genuinely answers questions, credible mentions from other websites, accurate and consistent business information. Google states plainly that the same fundamentals drive both ordinary results and its AI features, with no secret extra steps.
What changes is the writing and the goal. SEO tolerated, even rewarded, long padded pages built around keywords. AEO rewards the opposite: a direct answer to a specific question, stated clearly and early, that a machine can lift and quote without guessing what you meant. The goal moves from earning a click to earning a citation. Sometimes you get both. Increasingly you get the citation without the click, and being in the answer still puts your name in front of the customer.
What this means for how you write
Lead with the answer. If the question is “what does an AI assessment cost,” the first sentence should say what it costs, not build up to it. Keep claims specific and, where you have them, back them with real numbers, because concrete facts are exactly what an AI extracts and repeats. Use plain structure, clear headings, and short direct sentences. Every guide on this site is written this way, which is not a coincidence.
Written like that, one page serves both worlds: it can rank in classic search and it can be quoted in an AI answer. That is the whole point for a small business with no time to run two strategies.
The honest priority list
You do not need a big program. You need three habits: write answer-first content for the questions your customers actually ask, keep your business details identical everywhere they appear, and earn a handful of real mentions on reputable sites. That is it. It serves SEO and AEO at the same time and it does not require a marketing department.
If you want the practical, technical side, see how to make your website easy for AI to read and cite. If you want to know whether any of this is where your effort should go before your other AI opportunities, that ranking is what the assessment produces.
